Mudbound was so well written that I had to get my mitts on this book pre-publication and I am so glad I did. It is a retelling of Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter and quite haunting in its timeless theme of a woman scorned and the power that men have always wielded over women. Hannah the main character easy to get attached to and this haunting story of her life as a prisoner and then a fugitive will stick with you long after the cover has been closed. I was also haunted by the fact that we are so heavily influenced by our experiences early in life and they create a frame from which to view the world from and sometimes later not. Jordan creates a heavily charged novel that examines the rights of women, the passion of fanatics, and how religion influences so many people's life choices. Jordan is a great writer and now I have to wait for her next book or someone of equal talent to spark my interest in fiction again a summer time pleasure.
everyone so often i read a book that i get totally lost in, and this was one of them. i maybe didn't learn much about life or humanity, but it was definitely an escape.
