This is a book of historical fiction--"magical reality." The writing is quite good, if occasionally overwrought, and the book starts out promisingly. The plot flags a bit in the middle, and the ending is a real disappointment. The book is reviewed in today's NYT Review of Books and the reviewer captures it when he describes the novel as "ultimately frustrating."

If you are a woman in her 20s and have not read this book, DO SO NOW! It will stick with you from the first sentence.
