I am not sure what I expected when I picked this up, but I was certainly surprised by this book. I would actually say it is 2 different stories--the first a tale of a young boy trying to understand his late 19th-century world, the second a flat-out survival at sea tale. I will warn readers that the descriptions are very graphic--this is not a book for those with a weak stomach! All manner of bodily discharges are plentiful throughout. That said, I really enjoyed it. The sense of boyhood wonder grabs you right from the beginning, and you are ready to follow young Jaffy on all of his adventures. Who hasn't wanted to pet a tiger on the nose?
